Arthur L. Cass
2nd Lieutenant, U. S. Army
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 115 (April 30, 1945)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Armor) Arthur L. Cass (ASN: 0-2006569), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 14 March 1945 in Germany.
On that date, Lieutenant Cass, a tank platoon leader, was assigned the mission of clearing enemy troops from a heavily wooded area near Beurig, Germany. Although without infantry support, and in spite of having his tank hit three times by rocket projectiles, Lieutenant Cass succeeded in clearing half of the woods.
When infantry support arrived, Lieutenant Cass continued to fight in his damaged but mobile tank until another projectile set fire to the tank and wounded Lieutenant Cass. His courage, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty made possible the capture of an important objective and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
