The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Thomas M. Martinez (ASN: 38441541), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 26 November 1944 in France.
In an attack on the enemy, a request was made for treatment and evacuation of casualties. Without hesitating, Technician Fifth Grade Martinez and a companion voluntarily proceeded in their litter truck, while under intense automatic weapons, artillery, and small arms fire, to render prompt medical attention and successfully evacuate seventeen comrades , contributing greatly to the saving of the lives of these men.
The personal bravery, resourcefulness, and loyal devotion to duty of Technician Fifth Grade Martinez were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
