CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Arnold E. Svaton (ASN: 6288755), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Company **, ** Ranger Infantry Battalion, in action ** July 1943, at *****, Sicily.
Under heavy enemy shelling, Technician Fifth Grade Svaton worked continuously and without rest to repair three captured 105-mm. cannon which the enemy had practically demolished. Later, his technical assistance to the hastily assembled gun crew were instrumental in the destruction of six enemy vehicles, including four tanks, and also accounted for a large number of enemy riflemen killed. By his gallant efforts during this action, Technician Fifth Grade Svaton contributed materially to the successful defense of the ***.
