Connie Charles Armstrong

Sergeant, U. S. Marine Corps

Silver Star

GENERAL ORDERS:
Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 20581 (December 27, 1944)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Connie C. Armstrong (MCSN: 512651), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Vehicle Operator, serving with the First Joint Assault Signal Company, FIFTH Amphibious Corps, and attached to the First Battalion, Twenty-Fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Islands, 15 June 1944.
Daringly making repeated trips at night, Corporal Armstrong braved intense hostile fire to bring forward supporting weapons for the landing team to which he was attached. Although an enemy shell burst in the rear of his vehicle, taking off a portion and blowing out a tire, he made several trips thereafter and evacuated thirty-two wounded comrades to the beach, during which time his vehicle was hit three more times by Japanese shell fragments. His perseverance, self-sacrificing efforts and unwavering devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Armstrong and the United States Naval Service.
