Edgar H. Bowling

Sergeant, U. S. Army

Silver Star

GENERAL ORDERS:
Headquarters, 27th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 51 (July 31, 1944)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Edgar H. Bowling (ASN: 38101176), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 165th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division, at Saipan, Mariana Islands, during the period 17 June to 8 July 1944.
As acting Section Sergeant of a machine gun platoon, Sergeant Bowling, after being ordered to withdraw from an untenable position and upon seeing that one of the men in his section had been wounded, left cover, took the wounded man's place and assisted in removing the gun. He then organized and led back a party across terrain swept by enemy fire and succeeded in bringing back the wounded man.
Later, when the assault element to which he was attached was pinned to the ground by automatic weapons fire, Sergeant Bowling again left cover, with utter disregard for his own safety, and assisted one officer in carrying the machine gun across open terrain, which was continuously under enemy fire, to a position from which it could fire on the enemy strong point. He was killed at the gun position, but the fire from this gun materially assisted the forward movement of the assault elements.
