Lieutenant, U. S. Coast Guard
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander Naval Forces Europe: Serial 9466 (October 10, 1944)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Samuel W. Allison, United States Coast Guard (Reserve), for conspicuous gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of U.S.S. LCI(L) 326, successfully landing the SEVENTH Corps, United States Army on the Cherbourg Peninsula of France against well prepared defenses and strong opposition on 6 June 1944, and subsequently.
Lieutenant Allison fearlessly and efficiently landed his troops early on D-Day and stood off the beach for salvage duty. He observed that due to casualties the services of a control boat were needed, and he promptly volunteered for this assignment which was above and beyond his assigned duties and effectively carried on for the remainder of the initial assault, under concentrated shellfire and in constant danger of mines. The initiative, courage, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Allison were a valuable contribution to the success of the operation, and his conduct at all times was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
