Shipfitter 1st Class Petty Officer, U. S. Navy

Silver Star

GENERAL ORDERS:
Commander South Pacific Force and Area: Serial 00233 (January 21, 1943)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Shipfitter First Class Louis Deet Bonin (NSN: 3601822), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in the line of duty as member of the damage control party, U.S.S. PENSACOLA (CA-24), during the operation of that vessel subsequent to the torpedo hit received on the night of 30 November - 1 December 1942, in the action against enemy off Tassafaronga, Guadalcanal.
With utter disregard for his own safety and showing great courage, Shipfitter First Class Bonin entered the smoke and fire filled compartment, D-201-L, and attempted to open the watertight door leading to the shell deck of Turret 3 while 8" shells immediately inside the barbette were exploding as a result of the fire inside the turret. His action in attempting this hazardous task was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
