Weldon Quincy Adams
Sergeant, U. S. Marine Corps
Silver Star
GENERAL ORDERS:
Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 6112 (January 20, 1945)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Weldon Q. Adams (MCSN: 277410), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company L, Third Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Marianas Islands, 29 July 1944.
When his rifle platoon was sent 600 yards forward of the front lines to a cliff from which enemy machinegun fire had pinned down his company, Sergeant Adams immediately located the hostile position and, working his way back to gain the assistance of a supporting tank, discovered that all tank communications had been destroyed.
Exposing himself to heavy enemy fire, he unhesitatingly climbed to the top of a nearby tank and, guiding the vehicle into position, directed its fire on the Japanese troops, thereby reducing the emplacement and contributing materially to the advance of his unit. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
