Clifford Ray Gilbert

Chief Warrant Officer 3, U. S. Marine Corps

Navy Cross

GENERAL ORDERS:
SPOT AWARD, Commander in Chief Pacific Forces: Serial 02476
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Private First Class Clifford R. Gilbert (MCSN: 321916), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving as a Front Line Telephone Operator and Runner of Company K, Third Battalion, Twenty-second Marines (Reinforced), Fifth Amphibious Corps, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Eniwetok Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, on 20 February 1944.
During a counterattack when all the men around him were killed or wounded, including his Commanding Officer and Platoon Leader, Private First Class Gilbert continued to operate his power phone, the only means of communication between the front lines and the Company Command Post. Observing other men falling back under the fierceness of the counterattack, he used every means at his command to induce his comrades to hold their positions, the extremity of his efforts being directly responsible for the holding of the front lines and the ultimate annihilation of the enemy. In addition, he located the position of the main Japanese force, relaying this information to the front line units and to the Company Command Post, helped replenish ammunition, treated the wounded and directed the fire of supporting tanks. His gallant fighting spirit, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
