Elman Adair Anderson Sergeant, U. S. Marine Corps Navy Cross Elman Adair Anderson was born May 27, 1923 in Tulia, Swisher County, Texas. His parents were Frank Brolsius Anderson and Melrose Jones Anderson Alexander. He entered the United States Marine Corps in 1940 and attended Boot Camp in San Diego, California. He participated in the Battle of Saipan and the Marianas Operation. At the time of his death (September 3, 1944) he was serving with the 1st Battalion, 18th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. Sgt Anderson was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. Citation: The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Elman A. Anderson (290085), Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving with the First Battalion, Eighteenth Marines, Second Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Saipan in the Marianas, on 2 July 1944. Commander in Chief, Pacific Forces: Serial 2945 (April 5, 1945) He was returned home from the Marianas after the war and re-interred at Fort Sam Houston on January 13, 1949. |
