Barry Duran Browne In December 1944, Lieutenant Colonel Barry Duran Browne was serving with the 420th Field Artillery Battalion, Third U.S. Army. From 20 to 24 December, LTC Browne's unit was in action against German forces in the Senonchamps area near Bastogne, Belgium. LTC Browne was seriously wounded by a shell fragment on 24 December and died of the wound the next day. LTC Browne's skillful leadership, courageous actions and extraordinary heroism, at the cost of his life, earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. Medals and Awards Distinguished Service Cross Distinguished Service Cross Citation (Synopsis) The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Barry D. Browne (0-21099), Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 420th Field Artillery Battalion, in action against enemy forces from 20 to 24 December 1944. Lieutenant Colonel Browne's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
