Jack G. Berry In September 1943, then-Sergeant Jack G. Berry was serving with the 143rd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, Fifth U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations. During that month, SGT Berry's unit was in action against German forces. SGT Berry's courageous actions and extraordinary heroism in that period earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. Berry was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and was Killed in Action on 15 December 1943.
