David Wayne Brown David Wayne Brown was the son of James Mason and Nora Elizabeth Young Brown. On 6-7 May 1942, Sergeant David Wayne Brown was serving with the 93rd Bombardment Squadron, 19th Bombardment Group (Heavy), Fifth Air Force. On those days, SGT Brown was a crew member on a B-17 bomber participating in bombing missions against Japanese targets in support of Allied landings in the Solomon Islands. SGT Brown's courageous actions and devotion to duty during that time earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. SGT Brown was Killed in Action on 12 December 1945. Medals, Awards and Badges Distinguished Service Cross Distinguished Service Cross Citation (Synopsis) Sergeant David W. Brown (ASN: 6296430), United States Army Air Forces, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Member of the crew of a B-17 Heavy Bomber in the 93d Bombardment Squadron, 19th Bombardment Group (H), FIFTH Air Force, while participating in bombing missions on 6 and 7 August 1942, against enemy Japanese targets in support of Allied landings in the Solomon Islands. The personal courage and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Brown on this occasion have upheld the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 5th Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces. General Orders: Headquarters, South West Pacific Area, General Orders No. 34 (September 15, 1942) Memorialization Sergeant David Wayne Brown's remains were never recovered.
