Joshua Michael Palmer
First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps
Operation Iraqi Freedom

Joshua Michael Palmer was born on 28 November 1979, the son of Mark and Jacqueline Palmer.

After graduation from high school, Palmer enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves when he was 17 and worked three summers at his mother's restaurant, The Farmhouse. After graduation from high school, he earned a Bachelor's degree in International Relations from the University of San Diego. In 2003, he graduated from Officer Candidate School at Quantico, VA, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.

Lieutenant Palmer was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, CA, and was deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. He sent an e-mail home asking for candy, not for himself but for Iraqi children. "He said he liked to see them happy, and they loved the Americans," said his mother, Jackie Palmer. He had told his mother that he'd be home by summer, but she recently learned he was trying to extend his stay. "He wasn't going to leave until it was cleaned up," she said.

On 8 April 2004, 1LT Palmer was killed in action when he sustained wounds from hostile fire in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.
