Robert H. "Doc" Foglesong

General, U.S. Air Force

Robert H. "Doc" Foglesong was born on 13 July 1945 in Williamson, WV.

Foglesong earned his pilot wings at Columbus AFB, MS. He has held six commands. His staff tours include duty as Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, DC; Commander, 12th Air Force; Commander, U.S. Southern Command Air Forces; Deputy Chief of Staff for Air and Space Operations and Vice Chief of Staff at Headquarters U.S. Air Force.

On 5 November 2001, Foglesong was promoted to the rank of four-star General and named as Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Air Force (VCSAF). In 2003, he was assigned as Commander, U.S. Air Forces in Europe (COMUSAFE) and Commander, Allied Air Forces Northern Europe (COMAIRNORTH). In 2005, he became Commander, U.S. Air Forces in Europe (COMUSAFE); Commander, Allied Air Component Command; Air Component Commander, U.S. European Command; and Director, Multinational Joint Air Power Competence Center, Kalkar, Germany.

General Foglesong retired from the Air Force on 1 February 2006. During his service, he became a Command Pilot with over 4,400 flight hours in F-16, F-15, A-10, AT/T-38, AT/T-33, EB/B-57, T-41 and C-21 aircraft.

In Retirement

General Foglesong was President of Mississippi State University from 2006 to 31 March 2008. He resigned amongst widespread criticism from MSU architecture school students and faculty. He also faced backlash from student groups on social networking sites such as Facebook for purportedly ordering the removal of donated daffodils, which had been on the campus for decades.

He heads a scholarship program in West Virginia called the Appalachian Leadership and Educational Foundation, which he founded in 2006. He helped to establish the Appalachian Leadership Honors Program in 2006. Since 21 February 2006, he has been a director of Massey Energy, a major coal company.
