Biography:

Paul David Miller

Admiral, U.S. Navy

Paul David Miller was born on 1 December 1941 in Roanoke, VA.

He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Florida State University and a Master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Georgia in 1964. After graduation, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy after completing Officer Candidates School.

His commands include Command of the guided-missile destroyer USS Luce from 1978-79; Commander, U.S. Seventh Fleet, 1986-88; and Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Naval Warfare).

On 1 February 1991, Miller was promoted to the four-star rank of Admiral and assigned as Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet (CINCLANTFLT). In 1992, he was named as Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic (SACLANT) and Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Atlantic Command (USCINCLANT). In 1993, he became Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic (SACLANT) and Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Atlantic Command (USCINCACOM).

Admiral Miller retired from the Navy on 31 October 1994.

While in the Navy he attended the Naval War College and the Harvard Business School Executive Management Program.

In Retirement

Admiral Miller joined Litton Industries, Inc., where he headed Litton Marine Systems and served as President of Sperry Marine Inc. He joined Litton/Sperry Marine in 1994.

In January 1999, Miller joined Alliant Techsystems, a $1.1 billion aerospace and defense company with leading market positions in munitions, solid rocket propulsion, and composite structures, as Chairman of the Board of Directors. He retired from Alliant in March 2005.

He serves on the Board of Directors of SunTrust Bank (Eastern Region).

Miller is the author of several works on leadership and strategy.

Personal

Paul and his wife Becky have two sons -- Chris, a U.S. Navy Lieutenant serving as an M.D. at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA, and Colby, a U.S. Navy Ensign serving on USS Arleigh Burke (DDG-51).

Paul and Becky spend their time in retirement in Florida and near Williamsburg, VA.
