Bruce Allen Carlson

General, U.S. Air Force

Bruce Allen Carlson was born on 5 March 1949 in Hibbing, MN.

He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force in 1971 after completing the University of Minnesota Duluth's Air Force ROTC program as a distinguished graduate.

He has held various assignments in flying units. Staff assignments have included positions at Tactical Air Command, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, the offices of the Secretary of the Air Force and Secretary of Defense, and as the Director of Force Structure, Resources and Assessment with the Joint Staff. Additionally, he commanded the Air Force's 49th Fighter Wing at Holloman AFB, NM. Prior to assuming his current position, Carlson served as the Commander, 8th Air Force, Barksdale AFB, LA, and Joint Functional Component Commander for Space and Global Strike, U.S. Strategic Command, Offutt AFB, NE.

On 1 September 2005, Carlson was promoted to the rank of four-star General and assigned as Commander, Air Force Materiel Command, at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH.

General Carlson retired from the Air Force on 1 January 2009. Carlson is experienced in multiple aircraft weapons systems and, during his service, became a Command Pilot with over 3,000 flying hours. He has combat experience in the OV-10 and has also flown F-4, A-10, F-16, F-111, EF-111, AT-38, F-117 and B-52 aircraft.

In June 2009, he was appointed as President Obama's Director of the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office, an agency that operates the Nation's reconnaissance satellites.
