John Howard Cassady
Admiral, U.S. Navy

John Howard Cassady was born on 3 April 1896 in Spencer, IN. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated with the Class of 1919. He was designated a Naval Aviator in 1928.

His assignments included:

1937-39 Assistant Naval Attaché at the Embassy in Rome
1940-41 Operations Officer on the staff of the Commander of Aircraft, Atlantic Fleet.
1941-42 Chief of Staff to the Commander of the Operational Training Command at Jacksonville.
1943-44 Commanding Officer of the USS Saratoga. Promoted to Rear Admiral in August 1943. 1944-45 Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff of Naval Operations for Air.
1945-46 Commander of Carrier Division Four, Atlantic Fleet.

After World War II, he served as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Air) from January 1950 to May 1952 and as Commander of Sixth Fleet during 1952-54. On 7 April 1954, Cassady was promoted to the rank of four-star Admiral and assigned as Commander-in-Chief Naval Forces Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, where he served until his retirement in 1956.

Admiral Cassady retired from the Navy in May 1956.

Admiral John Howard Cassady died on 25 January 1969. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
