On 15 January 1969, Private First Class James Douglas Carey, Jr. was serving with E Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force, in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, PFC Carey was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
