On 14 July 1970, Sergeant James Lee Campbell was serving with C Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division, in Phuoc Long Province, South Vietnam.

Sergeant Campbell was killed in action that day when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
