On 24 May 1968, Specialist Four Michael James Burkhart was serving with the Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in Kontum Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, SP4 Burkhart was killed in action due to wounds sustained from artillery, rocket or mortar fire. His body was recovered.
