Brittany B. Gordon was born on 2 October 1988, the daughter of Cedric and Brenda Gordon. At the time of her death, her father, Cedric, was serving as the Assistant Police Chief of the St. Petersburg (Florida) Police Department She was a 2006 graduate of St. Petersburg High School in St. Petersburg, FL. Brittany then attended the University of Florida before deciding to enter the military. Brittany entered the Army in January 2010 and reported to Fort Jackson, SC, for Army Basic Training and then to Ft. Huachuca, AZ, for Advanced Individual Training in MOS 35F (Intelligence Analyst). She arrived at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), WA, in August 2010 and was assigned to the 572nd Military Intelligence Company, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. She deployed to Afghanistan with her brigade in April 2012 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. It was her first deployment. On 13 October 2012, SPC Gordon died after sustaining wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked her unit with an improvised explosive device (IED) in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
