Biography:

Wilfred Alan "Bill" Bacchus
Commander, U.S. Navy

Wilfred Alan Bacchus was born on 9 December 1926 in Alexandria, MN, the son of Ethel and James Bacchus. He was raised, along with four sisters and two brothers, on a humble farm in Alexandria.

He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with the Class of 1949. After serving on an amphibious ship during the Korean War, he spent most of his navy career in the submarine service on the Pacific, including command of the USS Spot. His final active service was at the Naval War College in Newport, RI, where he served on the faculty before retiring in 1969 to pursue a career in academia.

Bill married Marilyn Lyons in 1952 in Groton, CT.

A special interest in Latin American Studies led him to obtain a doctorate in International Affairs from the University of Connecticut in 1973, where he received distinction and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Throughout the following decades he wrote extensively on global sociopolitical topics, including a book, Mission in Mufti, which covered the 21-year period of Brazil's military governments. He retired from academia in 1992, after which he and Marilyn enjoyed many years of domestic and international travel, golfing with friends, researching genealogy, and visiting with family.

Bill's family considered him a wise and attentive man, who had a deep and constant faith. He was actively involved in the Presbyterian Church throughout his life, and was most recently a member of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Marilyn, his loving wife of almost sixty years, passed from this world on 10 December 2011. After her passing, he found great joy in volunteer work within the Williamsburg Landing community, where he served on the Chaplin Services Caring Team.
