Howard Austin Yeager Howard Austin Yeager was born on 9 September 1905 in Kansas. During World War II, Yeager was the Executive Officer of the battleship USS Nevada, which had been badly damaged in the attack on Pearl Harbor. On 12 July 1958, Yeager became the Commander of Amphibious Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. He was promoted to Vice Admiral on 23 July 1960. His last command was as Commandant of the Ninth Naval District at the Great Lakes Training Facility. He remained in that command until he and his wife died in a fire at his residence at the Great Lakes Training Base. Death and Burial Vice Admiral Howard Austin Yeager died on 11 March 1967 in Great Lakes, IL. His remains are interred at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, MD. |
