George Henry Weeks George Henry Weeks was born on 3 February 1834 in Gilford, NH. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1857 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. On 10 February 1859, he was sent to frontier duty in Minnesota where he participated in the expedition to Yellow Medicine River with the 4th Artillery. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was transferred to Ft. McHenry and to Ft. Washington in Maryland as Regimental Quartermaster at the rank of Captain. On 24 March 1862, he was assigned to the Quartermaster's Department, becoming Chief Quartermaster of the 3rd Corps, Army of the Potomac. He remained until 6 December 1864, as Chief Quartermaster at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In 1865, he was sent to the Pacific Coast as Chief Quartermaster. He served the depots at Ft. Vancouver, WA; San Francisco, CA; and the District of Alaska until 1867. Dispatched to Arizona as Chief Quartermaster of that Department on 22 June 1878, he went to Ft. Leavenworth in June 1880, and then served as Chief Quartermaster of the Department of the Division of the Pacific until 1888. In 1889, he transferred to the East, assumed his new duties as Depot Quartermaster at New York City and was promoted to Colonel, Assistant Quartermaster General on 16 May 1895. At the direction of the Secretary of War, he was appointed the 20th Quartermaster Brigadier General on 16 February 1897 and retired a year later after 40 years of service in the Army. He was inducted in the Quartermaster General Hall of Fame on 19 November 2000. Death and Burial Quartermaster Brigadier General George Henry Weeks died on 12 September 1905 in Washington, DC. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
