Henry Smith Turner Henry Smith Turner was born in April 1811 in King George County, VA. His mother was a member of the prominent Randolph family of Virginia. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy, Lt. Turner was chosen with two other officers to attend the Royal School of Cavalry in France. At that time, the French led the world in the perfection of their cavalry service. Lt. Turner, with the help of another office, translated and adapted the French tactics with some modification, for the Cavalry branch of the U.S. Army. It became a standard authority. He later became associated with James H. Lucas and General William Tecumseh Sherman in the banking business. Death and Burial Major Henry Smith Turner died on 16 December 1881 in St. Louis, MO. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum in St. Louis. |
