CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Thomas W. Butcher (ASN: 2224707), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Division, A.E.F., near Villers-devant-Dun, France, 2 November 1918.
Having been wounded in the back by a machine-gun bullet, Corporal Butcher led his squad through heavy machine-gun fire, capturing three guns and capturing or killing all of the crews.

On 23 April 1919 awarded the French Croix de Guerre with gilt star.
