CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Alfred H. Carrigan, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 142d Infantry Regiment, 36th Division, A.E.F., near St. Etienne, France, 8 October 1918.
After he had led his men through the wire and obtained cover, Lieutenant Carrigan saw one of his men wounded and entangled in the wire. He left cover under heavy fire to bring this man to safety. As he was helping him out of the wire he was shot in the neck by a machine-gun bullet.

On 28 February 1919 awarded the French Croix de Guerre with palm (Posthumously).
