CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Arthur M. Courtney (ASN: 1495063), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, A.E.F., near La Fontaine au Croncq Farm, France, 4 November 1918.
Private Courtney, a stretcher bearer, displayed exceptional gallantry in continuing to remove wounded from a field swept by machine-gun fire of such intensity that five of his associates were killed and two others wounded.
