CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John P. Gaines, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, A.E.F., near Soissons, France, 20 July 1918.
Second Lieutenant Gaines stayed with his command and led it to its final objective. After being wounded, he directed the consolidation of his position, and yielded his post only at the command of a superior officer.
