CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Jay D. Gumm (ASN: 210874), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 117th Train Headquarters and Military Police, 42d Division, A.E.F., at Vadenay, north of Chalons-sur-Marne, France, 15 July 1918.
During the shelling of Vadenay Sergeant Gumm voluntarily left a place of safety and went through heavy fire of major caliber shells and rescued a French soldier who was lying, severely wounded, in the street.
