GENERAL ORDERS:
War Department, General Orders 98 (1919)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Max Schumacher (ASN: 1136293), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 60th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, A.E.F., at Clery-le-Petit, France, 5 November 1918.
When the advance of his company was held up by enemy machine-gun fire, Private Schumacher, with his platoon commander and another soldier, advanced in front of the line and attacked a machine-gun nest, killing two gunners and taking eight prisoners, thereby enabling the company to advance and establish a brigade bridgehead.
