CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Lowa L. Singleton (ASN: 1496485), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, A.E.F., in the Meuse-Argonne offensive, France, 15 and 18 October 1918.
On 15 October, although severely wounded, Private Singleton refused to be evacuated and continued to perform his duties as platoon runner under difficult and dangerous conditions. On 18 October he exposed himself to heavy machine-gun and artillery fire in order to carry water to other members of his platoon, in the performance of which task he was mortally wounded.
