CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Lewis G. Spangler (ASN: 239734), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, A.E.F., near Fossoy, France, 15 July 1918.
During the intense shelling by the enemy just prior to their offensive of 15 July Private Spangler volunteered and carried a message through the heavy fire and returned with an answer.
