Ernest Murry Yantis

CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ernest M. Yantis, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 363d Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, A.E.F., near Tronsol Farm, France, 30 September 1918.
Leading his platoon as a combat patrol 500 yards ahead of the front line, under intense shell and machine-gun fire, Lieutenant Yantis was wounded three times, but remained on duty for more than an hour until relieved. He then refused to leave until the new officer had been fully informed as to his disposition and that of the enemy.

On 14 May 1919 awarded the French Legion d'Honneur (chevalier), by Presidential Decree.

On 24 April 1919 awarded the French Croix de Guerre with palm.
