CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) John L. Taylor, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, A.E.F., near Soissons, France, 18 July 1918.
Captain Taylor assumed command of his battalion upon the death of his major and continued to lead the advance under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, refusing to leave until he had been wounded five times. His example was an inspiration to all near him, and an important factor in the successful attack made by his regiment.

CITATION:
By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) John L. Taylor, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him.
Captain Taylor distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Chateau-Thierry, France, 6 - 7 June 1918, in securing valuable information under heavy enemy fire.

On 10 November 1918 awarded the French Croix de Guerre with silver star (Posthumously).
