William Fletcher Sharp William Fletcher Sharp was born on 22 September 1885 in Yankton, SD. Sharp was a career Army officer after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy and being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery in 1901. During World War I, he was Commanding Officer of the 11th Field Artillery Regiment and 78th Field Artillery Regiment on the Western Front. At the start of World War II, he was the Commanding General of the Visayan-Mindanao Force, Philippine Islands. In 1942, he was Commanding General of the Central Philippines Force, Philippines, when captured by the Japanese and was a prisoner of war until Japan surrendered in 1945. He retired from active service as a Major General in 1946. Death and Burial Major General William Fletcher Sharp died on 30 March 1947 in Georgia. He is buried at Ft. Leavenworth National Cemetery in Ft. Leavenworth, KS. |
