Edward Middleton
Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy

Edward Middleton was born on 11 December 1810 in Charleston, SC. He was born into a wealthy aristocratic family, being the son of Henry Middleton, Governor of South Carolina and Minister to Russia and grandson of Arthur Middleton, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Middleton was educated in England and France.

Middleton enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1828, and served aboard the frigate USS Java of the Mediterranean Squadron until 1831. He next was assigned to the sloop USS Vandalia of the West India Squadron from 1831-33 and during 1833-34 he was on the receiving ship at Brooklyn. On 14 June 1834, he was promoted to midshipman and his next assignment was the frigate USS Constitution in the Mediterranean from 1835-38. Middleton was then ordered to the sloop USS Marion of the Brazil Squadron from 1838-42. While aboard the Marion, he was promoted to Lieutenant on 25 February 1841.

Over the next decade he served on numerous ships, including the USS Lexington, USS Plymouth, USS Cumberland, USS Princeton, USS Erie and the USS Independence. In 1854 he joined the USS Decatur and participated in the campaign against the Indian tribes of Oregon and Washington and fought in the attack upon Seattle on 26 January 1856. That same day he was promoted to Commander and on 24 April 1863 promoted to Captain and was appointed to special duty in Washington, DC.

The next two years he was assigned to the Mare Island Navy yard in California and afterwards commanded the steam sloop USS Pensacola. He received his commission as Commodore on 26 November 1868 and was assigned to command the steam sloop USS Lackawanna in the Pacific Fleet.

He was commandant of the Navy yard at Pensacola, FL, in 1870 and was commissioned as Rear Admiral on 15 August 1876. 

Death and Burial

Rear Admiral Edward Middleton died on 27 April 1883 in Washington, DC. He is buried at the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.
