Biography:

Donald McIntosh
First Lieutenant, U.S. Army

Donald McIntosh was born on 4 September 1838 at Jasper House in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the son of James and Charlotte Robinson McIntosh. His father, a Scotch descendent of Sir James McIntosh, was a factor with the Hudson Bay Company, and was killed by Indians when Donald was 14. Charlotte was a direct descendent of Red Jacket, a Chief of the Six Nations.

McIntosh resided at a variety of Hudson Bay Company posts; Vancouver from 1846-51; Fort Dalles from 1854-60; and Fort Steilacoom in 1861. During the Civil War, he was Chief Clerk for Colonel Daniel Rucker. He married Mary "Molly" Garrett on 13 October 1866 in Baltimore, MD.

He was appointed as a Second Lieutenant, 7th Cavalry, on 17 August 1867, and joined the Regiment at Fort Harker, KS. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 22 March 1870. While at Fort Leavenworth, his commander, Colonel Samuel Sturgis, considered him to be "inefficient, ...indifferent to his official duties, ...a malingerer." He was reassigned to Company G, 7th Cavalry, where he became its Commander as the senior officer. Assigned to Major Reno's Battalion, he was killed in the valley fight while trying to rally his men.

Death and Burial

First Lieutenant Donald McIntosh was killed on 25 June 1876 in Big Horn County. He was originally buried on the battlefield and then moved to Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery in July 1877. In October 1909, his remains were moved to Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. His widow, Molly, who died 12 May 1910, is buried with him.
