William Spencer McCaskey William Spencer McCaskey was born on 2 October 1843. McCaskey was said to be, "the last surviving officer and the last man in the Regular Army who bore a musket or held a commission in the Civil War." Although McCaskey was not a member of the Seventh Cavalry on the fateful day of Custer's Battle at the Little Big Horn on 25 June 1876, he did have a role in its history. He was Commanding General of Fort Lincoln at the time and it was his duty to inform Custer's wife, Libbie, of her husband's fate. Death and Burial Major General William Spencer McCaskey died on 10 August 1914. He is buried at the San Francisco National Cemetery in San Francisco, CA. |
