Frederick Joseph Karch Frederick Joseph Karch was born on 9 August 1917 in Carmi, IL. Karch began his military career when he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1940 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. During World War II, he was a part of the U.S. forces Pacific Campaign against the Japanese and received the Bronze Star for his actions on Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. In 1961, he graduated from the Army War College and was assigned as Marine Corps Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1964. During the Vietnam War, he became notable as Commanding General of the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade when he led the first ground combat troops onto Red Beach, Da Nang, on 8 March 1965, by order of President Lyndon Johnson. For his efforts, he was awarded the Legion of Merit and retired from active service in June 1967. Death and Burial Brigadier General Frederick Joseph Karch died on 23 May 2009 in Arlington, VA. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
