Nicholas Herkimer Brigadier General, New York Militia Nicholas Herkimer was born in 1728. Herkimer was appointed Brigadier General Militia by the New York State Provincial Congress during the Revolutionary War, and led troops against a combined forces of Native Americans, loyalists and British soldiers at the 6 August 1777 Battle of Oriskany in Oneida County, NY. He was mortally wounded in the fight, which saw horrific casualties and both sides claiming victory. Death and Burial Brigadier General Nicholas Herkimer died on 17 August 1777 due to infection and conditions relating to loss of a leg during the Battle of Oriskany. He is buried at Herkimer Home Burial Ground in Little Falls, NY. |
