Henry Oliver Hansen was born on 14 December 1919 in Boston, MA.

Hansen was one of the six Marines who raised the first American flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, 23 February 1945, and photographed by Lou Lowery. The first flag was later replaced with the second flag raising made famous in the photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press.

Death and Burial

Sergeant Henry Oliver Hansen was killed in action on 1 March 1945. He is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, HI.
