William Ignatius Halloran William Ignatius Halloran was born on 23 July 1915. Halloran left his job as a journalist to volunteer for active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1940. After attending the U.S. Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School at Northwestern University, he was commissioned as an Ensign in June 1941. Ensign Halloran perished aboard the USS Arizona on 7 December 1941, when it was sunk during the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Medals and Awards (Posthumous) Purple Heart Honors • The USS Halloran (DE-305) was an Evarts-class destroyer escort launched in 1944. • In 1945, a Cleveland city park was named in Halloran's honor. Death Ensign William Ignatius Halloran died on 7 December 1941. His body is entombed in the USS Arizona Memorial in Honolulu, HI. A memorial marker for Ensign Halloran is located at Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland, OH. |
