James Alfred Goodwin, Sr. James Alfred Goodwin, Sr. was born on 7 September 1886 in Chowan County, NC. Goodwin was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy on 19 April 1917. A Gunner's Mate aboard the troop transport USS Mongolia, he was credited with sinking a German submarine in the English Channel, seven miles southeast of Beachy Head. The sinking was the first official hostile action against Germany after the U.S. entered World War I. Death and Burial Lieutenant James Alfred Goodwin, Sr. died on 15 April 1969 in Portsmouth City, VA. He is buried at Barnes-Culpepper Family Cemetery in Chesapeake, VA. |
