Robert Milner Echols Brigadier General, U.S. Army Robert Milner Echols was born on 18 March 1798 in Walton County, GA. Echols was raised in Walton County near Walnut Grove. He was a member of the Georgia General Assembly from 1824-29, and the Georgia State Senate from 1830-44, including six (non-consecutive) years as that Body's President. In a race for the U.S. Congress, Echols lost to his opponent, General Howell Cobb, by only two votes. Echols served as a Brigadier General in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War and was killed in action during the Battle of National Bridge. Honors Echols County, GA, is named in his honor. Death and Burial Brigadier General Robert Milner Echols died on 3 December 1847 in Veracruz-Llave, Mexico. Originally buried on the field in Mexico, several years after his death, the General Assembly passed an appropriation to have his remains relocated to his home in Walton County, where he was interred with full military honors. He is buried at Echols Family Cemetery in Windsor, GA. |
