John Porter East
First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps

John Porter East was born on 5 May 1931.

U.S. Senator for North Carolina 1980-1981.

Suffering from ill-health, East killed himself in his car in a garage attached to his Greenville, NC, home. In a 1990 news report, it was reported that his widow, Priscilla, filed a law suit against U.S. Navy doctors for negligence and that the suit was dismissed by a Federal Judge in Washington, DC. In the suit, it was indicated that he left behind a suicide note blaming naval physicians "for ruining my health."

Death and Burial

John Porter East died by his own hand on 29 June 1986 at his Greenville, NC, home. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
