John Jordan Crittenden John Jordan Crittenden was born on 7 June 1854. He was a Lieutenant temporarily attached to Company L in the 7th U.S. Cavalry. He was killed on Calhoun Hill during the Battle of Little Big Horn on 25 June 1876. He had suffered an eye wound less than a year before, and had to have his eye replaced with a glass one. It was this prosthetic eye that helped identify his remains after the battle. A year after his death hi remains were exhumed and moved to a permanent place on Calhoun Hill, in accordance with the wishes of his father, Colonel Thomas Crittenden, who wanted his son to remain with his men. However, in 1931 they were removed once more to the Custer National Battlefield Cemetery when a road was being built nearby to accommodate tourists. Death and Burial Second Lieutenant John Jordan Crittenden was killed in action on 25 June 1876 in Big Horn County, MT. He is buried at Custer National Cemetery in Big Horn County, MT. |
