William G. Cooke William G. Cooke was born on 28 March 1808 in Virginia. At the Battle of San Jacinto, he served on Sam Houston's staff with the rank of Major. He was in charge of the guard on the prisoners when Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was captured and prevented the angry Texans from executing Santa Anna. Cooke later served as Secretary of War in the Republic and as the first Adjutant General of the state. Death and Burial Major William G. Cooke died on 21 December 1847 in Guadalupe County, TX.
