Louis Charles Charlo
Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps

Louis Charles Charlo was born on 26 September 1926 in Missoula, MT.

Charlo was one of the six Marines who raised the first American flag on Mount Surabachi on Iwo Jima on 23 February 1945. This flag was later replaced by the flag in the famous flag-raising photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press.

Death and Burial

PFC Louis Charles Charlo was killed in action on 2 March 1945 in Japan. He is buried at Saint Ignatius Catholic Cemetery in Saint Ignatius, MT.
